Answering this question is not easy, mainly because there is no official body or sufficiently credible independent authority that would allow us to determine which addiction treatment centers have a particular success rate. Therefore, most centers that publish success rates rely on their own statistics, and here we would need to define what constitutes success.<\/p>\n

Is it considered a success when a patient is discharged\u2026 even if they have a relapse years later and seek help again?<\/p>\n

Is it considered a success if a patient completes the center's program?\u2026 even if they continue using drugs or relapse after leaving?<\/p>\n

Is it considered a success to hear nothing from the patient?\u2026 in cases where the patient discontinues treatment because they don\u2019t feel well, feel they aren\u2019t making progress, or feel they aren\u2019t receiving enough empathy from the treating professionals.<\/p>\n

Is it considered a success to have many patients in the program who have paid for a year of treatment in advance and are compelled to attend therapy and group sessions so as not to waste their financial investment?<\/p>\n

Is a decrease in a patient\u2019s substance use (risk reduction)\u2014which allows the patient and their family to lead a dignified and fulfilling life\u2014considered a success, even if the patient has not stopped using substances?<\/p>\n

In short, one of the major problems with the addictive disorders<\/a> The fact is that people who suffer from addiction have experienced sensations and changes in their brain\u2019s synaptic connections that are long-lasting, and that if they had not used the toxic substance, they would not have the \u201cbrain-based\u201d memory of that sensation. People suffering from an addiction will struggle with their internal urges to use\u2014to a greater or lesser extent\u2014for many years, and as with everything, there is no guarantee that when faced with a significant life situation or a major problem, their brain won\u2019t seek shortcuts to feel better.<\/p>\n
