    Understanding Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol is the most widely used legal drug in Spain and one of the substances that causes the most health, family, and work-related problems. It is possible to stop drinking, but abruptly stopping alcohol consumption can be medically dangerous. That is why detoxification must be done under medical supervision. Understanding this is the first step toward treating the problem.

Effects and Signs of Substance Use +
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. After consumption, the following may occur:

    • Disinhibition and initial euphoria.
    • Relaxation and a sense of greater sociability (a perceived effect).
    • He speaks in a slur. (difficulty articulating words).
    • Coordination Issues motor and balance skills.
    • In severe intoxication: vomiting, decreased level of consciousness (alcoholic coma), and respiratory depression.

Withdrawal Syndrome (upon stopping or reducing use after prolonged use): tremors, sweating, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, tachycardia, and hypertension. In severe cases, hallucinations, seizures, and delirium tremens (confusion, agitation, and fever), a potentially life-threatening medical emergency. That's why, if you drink every day or in large quantities, Don't try to detox on your own at home: Seek medical attention.

    Dual Diagnosis +
Alcohol use often coexists with other mental disorders; we refer to this co-occurrence as dual diagnosis. Sometimes the mental disorder precedes substance use, and other times it develops afterward, which is why it is important to assess and treat both at the same time. It may include, among other things:

    • Depression and anxiety disorders.
    • Bipolar Disorder and Other Mood Disorders.
    • Alcohol-induced psychotic disorder.
    • Sleep Disorders.
    • Cognitive decline.

    Organic complications +
Regular or heavy alcohol consumption may be associated with various medical complications. Not everyone has them: These depend on the amount, duration of consumption, and individual factors. Among those described:

    • Liver-related: fatty liver (steatosis), alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis.
    • Digestive: gastritis, pancreatitis, and bleeding.
    • Cardiovascular: high blood pressure, arrhythmias, and cardiomyopathy.
    • Neurological: cognitive impairment, polyneuropathy, and Wernicke's encephalopathy (confusion, balance disturbances, and abnormal eye movements), which can lead to Korsakoff's syndrome (a memory disorder); both are caused by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency.
    • Oncology: an increased risk of various types of cancer.
    • Sexual dysfunction.

    Treatment for Alcohol Withdrawal +
The treatment consists of two stages:

    • Medically supervised detoxification. La medicación se administra siempre by prescription and according to an individualized treatment plan: Do not self-medicate, and do not combine alcohol with benzodiazepines or other sedatives, due to the risk of respiratory depression.
    • Withdrawal. Seguimiento a largo plazo.

We work with the Unified Transdiagnostic Model (MUT), nuestro modelo de tratamiento transdiagnóstico, que combina las terapias con mayor respaldo científico y atiende al mismo tiempo el consumo y lo que suele acompañarlo, como la ansiedad o la depresión (patología dual). El tratamiento puede ser outpatient clinic —compatible with your daily life— or with admission if your situation calls for it. We always decide this together with you.

This treatment is part of our substance abuse treatment in Madrid, where we also addressed the cocaine, the cannabis and the heroin. We also cover the mephedrone and the nitazenes. You can learn more about our addiction treatment center in Madrid, the detox center and the outpatient treatment, with or without income.

How much does it cost? +

Si bebes a diario o en gran cantidad, Don't drink all at once without supervision. This information is for guidance only and It does not replace an individual professional evaluation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it dangerous to stop drinking all at once? +
This can happen if alcohol consumption is heavy or prolonged: alcohol withdrawal can cause seizures or delirium tremens. That is why detoxification is done under medical supervision and, if necessary, with medication. Do not try to quit on your own at home if you drink every day or in large quantities.
Will I have to be admitted? +
Not always. Many detox programs are outpatient and can be integrated into your daily life; if your situation calls for an inpatient stay, we’ll discuss it with you. It’s never mandatory.
Will my family or my employer find out? +
Is it really possible to quit drinking? +
How long does the treatment last? +
It depends on each person; no two cases are alike. During the first interview, we assess your situation and explain a realistic, step-by-step plan to you.
What happens on a first appointment? +
It's a relaxed and confidential interview to get to know you and understand what you need. No judgment.
