    Clinical Information

    Understanding Mephedrone Addiction

Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone) is a synthetic cathinone, one of the so-called new psychoactive substances (NPS). It acts as stimulating —similar to amphetamines— but it also has a component similar to MDMA, y eso explica parte de sus riesgos.

In the hours following consumption, one or more of the following signs may appear:

    • Euphoria and increased energy, sociability, and lack of inhibition.
    • Bruxism (clenched jaw) and dilated pupils.
    • Anxiety, suspicion, or paranoid thoughts; in cases of heavy use, agitation, or psychosis.
    • Insomnia and then a "slump" feeling tired, low in spirits, and intense craving.
    • Pattern for compulsive re-consumption (repeated doses) that increase the risk.

An important fact: Cathinones such as mephedrone do not usually show up in standard urine tests (Rapid "amphetamine" tests often come back negative even if the person has used the drug recently.) Confirming the diagnosis requires specific laboratory tests. That is why the diagnosis is based primarily on the medical history, not based on a test. The profile described is for general guidance only; every person is different.

    Dual Diagnosis +
Mephedrone use often coexists with other mental health issues; we refer to this co-occurrence as dual diagnosis, and it is important to evaluate and treat it at the same time. This may include, among other things:

    • Paintings by depression and anhedonia, especially during the "low" phase.
    • Anxiety and insomnia.
    • Induced psychosis: It is usually temporary and improves with abstinence, but in vulnerable individuals it can unmask or trigger a persistent disorder.
    • Decompensation of a bipolar disorder previous.
    • Multiple Drug Use and other addictions.

    Health complications +
Mephedrone use may be associated with various complications. Not everyone has them: These depend on the dose, route of administration, frequency, and individual factors. Among those described:

    • Cardiovascular: tachycardia, palpitations, hypertension, chest pain.
    • Due to overstimulation: heatstroke (hyperthermia), profuse sweating, dehydration, muscle spasms.
    • Neuropsychiatric: anxiety, agitation, paranoid thoughts, psychosis.
    • Bruxism, severe headache, blurred vision, tolerance.

In some cases, consumption occurs in sexual context (chemsex). If this is your situation, we'll address it without judgment and with a focus on sexual health.

    Treatment for Quitting Mephedrone +
The treatment consists of two stages:

    • Initial stage. An initial interview (by phone or in person) and an assessment at the center—with the family, if desired—to determine the pattern of use, motivation for change, personal history, and the needs of each individual.
    • Specific stage. We designed a Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP) in which you play an active role in your recovery, with goals tailored to your situation (reducing use, breaking the habit, or abstinence).

It is our own integrated work model, the Unified Transdiagnostic Model (MUT): integra tratamientos con respaldo científico —cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention— and also addresses anxiety, depression, or insomnia, which often accompany substance use (dual diagnosis).

Unlike opioids, mephedrone There is no antidote or replacement therapy: There is no specific medication “to quit.” Treatment may include outpatient clinic —compatible with your daily life— or with admission if your situation calls for it. We always decide this together with you.

This treatment is part of our substance abuse treatment in Madrid, where we also addressed the cocaine, the synthetic drugs and the alcohol. You can learn more about our addiction treatment center in Madrid, the detox center and the outpatient treatment.

How much does it cost? +

In light of signs of stimulant toxicity —chest pain or tightness, severe palpitations, or fainting; high fever with very hot skin, muscle stiffness or twitching, and confusion (golpe de calor); convulsiones; agitación extrema o psicosis—, es necesaria una valoración médica urgente. Esta información es orientativa y It does not replace an individual professional evaluation.
